Dnd board game dice have different names depending on the number of sides. Each type also has a symbol. Because “five-sided trapezoid” doesn’t roll off the tongue easily.
In Dungeons & Dragons, D4, D6, D8, D10, and D12 dice are used for weapon damage, attacks, character skills, spells, and healing amounts. The D20 dice is used to see if an action succeeds.

D4 DnD Board Game Dice

The D4 is a four-sided die. It is also called a tetrahedron or caltrop. It is not as easy to roll as other shapes due to its large flat sides. When rolling a four-sided die, the number of uprights indicates the value.

D6 DnD Dice

The D6 dnd dice  is the standard cubic die found in most games. Many gamers have three six-sided dice for quick rolling of multiples. For example, in Dungeons & Dragons, there are initial rolls of three D6 dice to determine character attributes.

D8 DnD Dice

The D8 is an eight-sided die, also called an octahedron. An eight-sided dice has triangular faces. These dice resemble two pyramids attached to a base. The eight-sided dice are often used for damage caused by larger weapons.

D10 DnD Board Game Dice

The D10 is a trapezoidal dice with five sides and you guessed it. Two dice are included in the standard D&D set. The faces of these are numbered 0-9 and the other has faces from 00-90 in multiples of 10. These are often used as percentile dice to determine the success or failure of an action.

D12 Polyhedral Dice

The D12 is called a dodecahedron. This is a twelve-sided die with faces shaped like a five-sided dice. D12 dice stack well and are used for damage caused by larger weapons.

D20 Polyhedral Board Game Dice

The D20 is also known as the Icosahedron and is a trademark of Dungeon & Dragon. It is larger and rounder than other dice. The D20 has adjacent faces in the shape of an equilateral triangle. The D20 determines the success of an attempted action.
